Hyundai Motor India boasts of being the second largest car maker, and the largest exporter of cars in India. The company which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Corporation was formed on 6 May 1996. Initially the Hyundai brand wasnt very well known in India, with old timers like MUL, HM and PAL etc hogging the lions share of the market. However, the very first model of Hyundau launched in India, the Santro became a big success and today Hyundai poses a serious threat of displacing the market leader Maruti Suzuki in the coming year. |

Hyundai i20Overview The i20 is Hyundai’s offering in the new age premium hatchback car segment. Unlike the previous iterations of the Santro, this hatchback breaks away from the manufacturer’s conventional Korean design philosophy. The i20 has been designed from ground up on an entirely new platform. This is not a typical weird or rather comic looking ’value for money’ Hyundai offering. With a sophisticated and proportionate European design wrapped around a well rounded package, this hatchback matches up to its European rivals as a well rounded competitor.
Design and Features The i20 does not conform to the tall boy theme but exudes a stylish and elegant European look. The design philosophy behind the i20 was to maximize interior space within a compact exterior without being an eye sore. The transparent flush mounted headlamps along with sleek front grille and wide air dam make the front end look appealing. The rear end comprising of a wrapped around bumper and pulled up tail lamps fits in proportionately with the overall design. The neat lines which run from the front to end around its waist do a good job in aiding the i20’s polished look.
The i20 is offered to buyers in two variants namely Magna and Asta. The base variant Magna gets AC, power windows, rake/reach adjustable steering, folding rear seats, CD/MP3 player and central locking. The top of the line Asta variant comes equipped with ABS, EBD, 6 airbags, alloy wheels, rear wiper, leather covered steering wheel, fog lamps and electrically retractable door mirrors in addition to the above features. There is also a multi information display which comprises of a trip meter, display for the audio system, seat belt on/off indicator for all five seats, calendar, outside temperature and can calculate an approximate driving time for the proposed journey.
Driving abilities and Comfort Not only does the i20 look like an European hatchback, but it even handles like one. The monocoque chassis, a wheelbase longer than the Verna and wide track play a key role in enhancing its driving dynamics. The chunky and high on grip Apollo Accelere rubber also plays a key role in improving its handling package. While driving at high speeds on straight roads this hatchback feels as planted as some of the bigger C segment cars. In terms of handling, this hatchback does not feel like a regular offering from the Hyundai stables.
It’s a pleasure to guide this car through winding hill roads owing to the precise steering. The braking capability and the ease with which the i20 sheds speeds further boost the driver’s confidence. This car exudes supreme levels of composure irrespective of the speed of travel. It lays more emphasis on ride comfort than handling and it surely doesn’t disappoint in that department. The i20’s’s ride quality cannot be matched by its competitors though they might offer better handling abilities. With gas filled shock absorbers doing duty all around, passengers are well cocooned from the undulations that our roads continually present.
Engines Hyundai offers the i20 with three engine options including the 1.2 liter Kappa petrol mill which also does duty on the i10, a 1.4 liter Gamma petrol powered unit and a 1.4 liter CRDi mill. The 1.2 liter petrol engine develops a maximum power of 80PS@5200rpm and a max torque of 11.4 kg@4000rpm and returns an overall fuel efficiency of 15kpl. The 1.4 liter petrol engine pushes out a max power of 100PS@5500rpm and max torque of 13.9kg@4200rpm and is offered with a 4-speed automatic transmission. The CRDi engine develops a max power of 90PS@4000rpm and a max torque of 22.4kg from 1750 rpm onwards till 2750 rpm and travels 16kpl on a liter of diesel. In terms of performance the petrol powered i20’s feel sluggish. The 1.2 liter engine powered i20 takes 16 seconds to complete 0-100kph acceleration run. The diesel mill offers more excitement to the driver and takes 13 seconds to reach 100kph from standstill.
The Competition The 1.2 Kappa powered i20’s base Magna variant is priced at from Rs.5.68 lakhs (on-road Mumbai) while the top end Asta variant retails for Rs.6.55 lakhs (on-road Mumbai). The 1.4 Asta automatic has a price tag of Rs. 8.5 lakhs (on-road Mumbai). The 1.4 litre CRDi engine powered models have an asking price stretching from Rs. 7.20 lakhs (on-road Mumbai) onwards for the base Magna variant till Rs. 8.4 lakhs (on-road Mumbai) for the top Asta variant. The I20 competes against the likes of Skoda’s Fabia and the Volkswagen Polo. If you are on the lookout for a European styled hatchback with good looks, big car feel, robust build quality, roomy cabin and adequate on road performance, then look no further. Simply put, the i20 is a bigger, more spacious and better quality i10 which scores more than its younger sibling in all segments while being equally easy on the pocket. Hyundai i10Overview The i10 is Hyundai’s hatchback offering in the B segment and was launched in November 2007. In December 2008 a new engine variant was added to the existing model range. The i10 marked the beginning of Hyundai’s contemporary hatchback styling. In India, the i10 is sold alongside the manufacturer’s Santro which fits in the A+ segment. The i10 performs way better than the Santro in all departments.
Design and Features The i10 has been designed in the interests of attaining maximum space optimization. The end result is a sober and plain vanilla design with no Korean quirks, a high, stubby bonnet and a curvaceous form. From the front the headlamps seem quite small in comparison to the big and wide air dam. A high waistline doesn’t offer any help. Overall the designed gets livened up a bit by the black plastic strips which run around the car. Unlike previous small cars from Hyundai (the first Santro), the i10 doesn’t look gawky and conforms to the visual taste of Indians. On the inside, the i10 sports the best interior in its class with respect to quality, layout and appeal. The gear lever is integrated into the central console while the dashboard, doorpads, roofs and seats are done up in dual tone beige and black colours.
The 1.1 variant i10 is available across Hyundai showrooms in two models namely D-lite and Era. The D-lite variant comes equipped only with air conditioning and power steering. While the Era variant sports body colored bumpers, chrome finish radiator grille, front power windows and central locking in addition to the above two features. The 1.2 manual and automatic transmission variants are sold in three models namely Magna, Sportz and Asta. The Magna is the base variant and offers only air conditioning, power steering, power windows, central locking and rake adjustable steering wheel. The Sportz variant gets a MP3 player, rear defogger and rear wiper in addition to the features on the Magna. The Asta is the top model and comes fully loaded with all the above features along with fog lamps, two airbags and ABS as standard.
Driving abilities and Comfort The i10 has not been created with the intention of satisfying the cravings of driving enthusiasts, but it doesn’t disappoint either. It feels adequately equipped in handling prowess and driving dynamics department unless you start pushing it beyond what it’s meant to do. The i10 has been developed to play the role of an efficient city car. In technical terms, that means a soft suspension setup which limits driving fun on winding roads. While hot-footing through corners the front end begins to understeer and the rear gets jittery too. On straight roads at speeds even in excess of 130kph the car doesn’t feel wavy.
The i10 will appeal massively to the ’slow and steady’ family men but not to ’boy racers’. The soft suspension setup ends up arming the i10 with best in class ride quality. The passengers are well cocooned from the harsh realities of the road surface. The i10 absorbs every dimple, pimple, pothole and crater that the road throws at it with consummate ease. This small car is not an able handler but compensates for it with an Aladdin’s magic carpet quality ride.
Engines The i10 is offered to buyers with two engine options namely a 1.1liter (1086cc) iRDE (Intelligent Response Drive Engine) and 1.2 liter (1197 cc) Kappa engines. Both engines are petrol powered and have a four cylinder configuration. The iRDE engine deploys three valves per cylinder while the Kappa one gets four vales for each cylinder. The 1.1 engine develops a max power while of 66.6PS@5500rpm and a max torque of 10.1kg@2800rpm. The 1.2 Kappa engine develops a max power of 80PS@5200rpm and a max torque of 11.4kg@4000rpm and is offered with 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission options. The Intelligent Response Drive Engine has been designed in the interests of delivering good performance without compromising on fuel efficiency while the Kappa engine boasts of the lowest NVH levels in its class. The 1.1 litre variant achieves the 0-100kmph run in 16 seconds while the 1.2 variant completes the same in 14 seconds. Both engines return an average fuel efficiency of 16kpl.
The Competition The 1.1 Hyundai i10 model retails in the price bracket of Rs.4-4.5 lakhs (on-road Mumbai) for the base and top variant respectively. The 1.2 manual transmission model is priced in the range of Rs.4.8-5.9 lakhs (on-road Mumbai). The i10 serves its purpose of being a highly competent city car which can handle occasional weekend getaways too. Its looks won’t maim you but the best in class interiors and ride quality will pamper you unlike any other B segment car in the market currently.
