Keeping the youth of India in view, Ford Motors introduced Ikon in 1999, but its latest model, Flair was launched in 2006. Ikon is a sporty, stylish vehicle that performs smoothly at an affordable price. The elegant design, the spacious interiors with dual tone, gives Ikon a handsome look. One can have a reliable and joyful ride at a time in this aerodynamically profiled sedan.
Design and Features:
This sedan is a three box model with a stylish design. It is a monocoque body, built strongly. The grill less kinetic design, the sculpted lines, body coloured bumper, the sparkling head lamps, alloy wheels and the seven-spoke wheel cover give Ikon a strong and bold look.
The new variants of Ikon come with elegant interiors like power steering, a sporty steering wheel, power windows, matching seat covers, neatly designed dash, stylish instrument panel, handy controls, chrome finished gear knob, the audio system, comfortable seats, front and rear seat belts, a wide choice of storage places and anti-submarine seats. It is featured with a silent and spacious cabin with sufficient headroom and legroom in both the rows.
Ford Ikon’s Dynamic Safety Engineering system distributes the load evenly and protects its occupants from the impact of collisions. Other safety features include the laminated glazed wind screen, rear child locks, high mount stop lamp, front and rear side impact door beams, Anti-Theft System, remote less key and central locking electric fuel cap release.
Driving abilities and comfort:
Ford Ikon impresses with its ride and handling. The power assisted steering wheel is very responsive. Its suspension design, well balanced chassis and the steering make the driving stable and exciting whether it is in the slow city traffic or on a high way. Even the shift quality is good. It is one of the first few cars in India designed with the driver in Mind.
It makes driving a real pleasure in this car.
The lower back support adds to the comfort of the seating. The entry and exit are also very comfortable. The extra vent for air condition at the back, the rear seat inclination and the reading lamps at the rear helps the occupants of this car to travel long distances happily.
All power windows, electric boot release, AC with heater and internally adjustable outside rear view mirrors are standard in both the variants.
Ford Ikon Flair is powered by 1.3L ROCAM (Roller Finger Camshaft) petrol engine that pumps out a power of 70 PS @ 5500 rpm and a maximum torque of 105 Nm @ 2500 rpm. This car with its torque at low rpm is best suited for Indian city roads. A chain-driven Single Overhead Camshaft (SOHC) makes it rattle free. The ROCAM engine has a computer controlled engine management – EEC V – for better power and fuel efficiency. The Sequential Electronic Fuel Injection (SEFI) helps in reducing the emission levels. It injects metered quantities of fuel into the inlet tract for each cylinder at the optimum point in the combustion cycle.
The 1.4L Duratorq engine pumps out 68PS @ 400rpm. It has a massive torque of 160nm at a very low 200rpm.
This makes this engine extremely drivable.
Both the engines are fuel efficient.
The gear shifting of Ikon Flair is seamless. The feel and throw of the gear shift encourages to shift it frequently.
Even beyond 4,000 rpm, the car is firm on highways. The engine growls and is fun for adventurous young drivers. It still makes the driver happy with the way it behaves on the road.
Ford Ikon stands as the India’s largest exported car. It is available in only 2 variants – 1.3 Rocam and 1.4 Duratorq TDCi, which are priced in the range of Rs. 5 Lakhs and 5.9 Lakhs.
This car stands in competition to Renault Logan and Maruti Suzuki Dzire.
